Wings of Art (Ghana Edition)

Last month (July), I was fortunate to return to Ghana, Africa to visit my kids at FEDEP International School. Last year, I was able to create an art program for the kids. Unfortunately, the school nor the kids had the resources such as crayons, colored pencils, etc. So I was able to purchase the little amount of supplies that I could while I was there.

This time around I had to go back to visit my kids since I promised to visit them. I knew I wanted to bring them something, which is when I remembered how happy they were when I purchased the little amount of supplies that I did last year.

So I decided, why not spread the word about these kids who love to draw, but do not have the resources to do so. I am happy to say that the word did spread about my trip to Ghana and how I was collecting art supplies for the kids.

We received the following supplies:

Colored pencils,

Pencils,

Construction Paper,

Glue,

Stickers,

Markers,

Scissors,

Folders,

Pens, etc.

The kids were listening to the Educational Director as he explained to them about the

"surprise".

They were amazed to see what was being given to them.

"Through ART we can make a difference."

Olivia Corya

As many of you may know I had gone to Ghana, Africa this summer to volunteer and while there I met some amazing volunteers from around the world, including the lovely Olivia Corya. Olivia is a photojournalist who is a Junior at Indiana University majoring in Journalism, Spanish, and International studies. During our time there, Olivia was capturing the Ghananian culture and people, as well as the volunteers and their experiences.

I had a chance to hang out with Olivia and what I loved her about her was how kind hearted she was and how passionate she was about her photography. There was rarely a moment you would see her without her camara. Even when your trying to have a conversation with her should would snap a picture because there was something about the way you talked or your facial expression that she had to capture.

1. When was the first time you picked up a camara?

When I was really little I guess around 7ish, I spent hours one day taking pictures of my tv screen when National Geographics was on. I'll waste rolls and rolls of film thinking I was a safari photographer getting these great shots of lions and dolphins in my living room. I was so disappointed when they came back from the photo lab and all the animals were obscured by huge white blobs where the flash had reflected!

2. How would you describe your photography?

In the photo world they talk a lot about discovering your personal "vision", which involves learning how to take a photo that makes people understand how you saw the subject (or in the case of non-journalism photography, how you felt about that subject) when you clicked the shutter. I'm definitely just beginning my long relationship with my camara and trying to find that vision.

3. What's your goal with photography?

My obsession with making the world a better place consumes me every single day! I want to make Americans care more about the problems afflicting the rest of the world, and know more about the cultures thriving outside their own.

4. There are lots of inspiring artist who want to pursue their passion full-time, but fear being a "starving artist". What do you have to say about that and your craft?

I just know that for me, money could never bring one millionth of the happiness my photographs could bring me if I think they actually help improve other people's lives, which is my goal in documentary photography. Sometimes I get scared about not being able to afford healthcare, but other than that, I just genuinely believe I'll get enough fulfillment out of life with my camara in my hand and the stories I'll get to tell.

And I don't know too much about other art media, but I'm guessing that, like photography, there are ways to supplement your income if you really need it. I can always do wedding photography, for example, if I'm seriously low on money. There are probably ways in any field to do commerical work to sustain your long-term creative passions.

5. It seems like you've been all around the world at such a young age. Where have you traveled? Is there a country that your dying to visit?

I've been lucky enough to go to Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, France, India, and Ghana. And my step brothers and sisters live in Scotland, so my family goes there pretty frequently to visit them.

I was actually destined for Thailand this summer, but ended up going to Ghana at the last minute because of the escalating violence in Bangkok with the Red Shirt protests. I'd still absolutely love to go there.

5. Who or what would you like to photograph, whether it's past, present, or future? and why?

Everyone and Everywhere! You know you're on the career-track that's right for you when you get off work and can't wait to go do more of the same thing for free.

6. Do you consider photography an ART?

I think photography CAN be art, of course, and I have great respect for fine art photographers, but that's not really interests me. While I want my photos to be beautiful and poignant like "art" photography can be, a blank wall and a picture frame in someone's house obviously wouldn't be an appropiate context in which to place a photograph of a war refugee, for example.

7. What does the future hold for Olivia?

Quoting myself, I "want to spend my life making photographs that elevate the dignity and well-being of my 6.8 billion neighbors." Basically, I want to work internationally on documentary photo/video projects. I'll probably start out in Latin America, because that's my "regional concentration" in my international studies major, but I'd like to go anywhere I think people's stories need to be told, which I guess is everywhere..haha

8.What's a motto, quote, or saying you live by?

I don't really repeat a "carpe diem" mantre to myself or anything. But something that's similar to a quote that I like thinking about is when one of my friends in Ghana asked his host mom how her day was, she replied "It was good...full of enjoyment." I thought it was simple and lovely, and it's a refreshing perspective when I get caught up in all the busy details of the day.

Well, the moment has arrived....

I'm honored to say that I've met Joe, the Founder of Branded Baron and he's a humble individual. We had met at a sneaker event where he was sharing the Branded Baron love. I started talking about his clothing line, fashion, the Arts and etc. I can say this man is HUNGRY and PASSIONATE for his craft and that's something WOA respects.

Branded Baron

1. What's the story behind Branded Baron?

In High School I had some shirts printed for clubs and some sports teams that I designed. Then in college, I started to design some shirts for the club's open mic events and was told by many people that I should sell them. I had definitely been thinking about designing my own items to wear. I've always liked cool looking graphic tees and I've always wanted my own art on apparel. When I graduated, my co-worker that I was on a marketing team with inspired me to focus on my creating my line. From there, I began doing my research, adding my friend to handle the financial end, the design, and purchasing designs that fit my line. Also, it helped that I worked at a screenprinter. In '08, I was selling my 1st design out of the trunk of my car. In '09 I released my first two lines.

2. When or how did you know the fashion industry was your path?

Probably at the last semester of college. I went to study graphic design, but realized I could implement what I learned to the fashion industry in the same form.

3. If Branded Baron could speak, how would Branded Baron describe its self?

It'll either say, "Branded Baron, I'm No Less Than Stunningly Fresh. If you Rock my clothes, you'd be Stunningly Fresh too" or "Branded Baron is for the music lovers, art lovers, t-shirt aficionados, jocks, nerds, fighter, skater, those looking to express themselves, but most important it's for YOU, the individual."

4. Did you come across any bumps during your journey in launching Branded Baron? If so, what happened? How did you overcome it?

I think no matter how prepared you are, you're always going to hit bumps in the road. When Branded Baron was launched, it was at the end of August and I felt like summer was the one for us. Also, when we launched we didn't have a couple of shirt due to the printer, even though the company was told ahead of time on the date the shirts would be needed. Needless to say, on that day a couple of shirts were not in stock and it sucked e-mailing people that their order is delayed. But, to make-up for this problem we decided to give away some limited edition shirts as a thank you and apology for the delay of their order. Luckily our next launch in the winter went a lot more smoothly.

5. What motto, slogan, or phrase you live by in motivating you to keep striving?

There's a couple that I really like and I've used some on the Branded Baron designs.

"Carpe Diem"- Latin for "Seize the day",
"To Live is To Fight",
"A Life not lived is lost",
"No Less Than Stunningly Fresh" pretty much means it has to be the cream of the crop and no mediocrity allowed.
One that I've always liked was by Bill Cosby,
" I don't know what the key to success is, but I do know the key to failure is trying to please everyone."

6. Do you consider what you do an ART?

Yes. Andy Warhol created silkscreen graphic art and my graphics are silkscreened. It's funny, during my 1st year of college, I had to do a research paper about "Who was my artistic kindred spirit" and little did I know that I would've used the same process that made Warhol famous with Branded Baron.

7. What would you say to the inspiring fashion designers or those trying to get into the fashion business?

First. DON'T RUSH! That's key for anything, especially if you want to do it right. You also have to take risks. You can't do everything on your own, so have a team that's a 100% behind you to help out. Anthony, our Vice President handles the boring important stuff like the financial info. Danette is my recent addition to the team who helps me with the designs. I have a couple of friends that help me with promoting/marketing. Most importantly HAVE FUN! Seriously, if your not enjoying what you're doing then find something that does make you happy. Yes, there will be stressful moments, but when I see an order that was an online purchase or sell in person it makes me happy to know that someone likes my designs. I have fun meeting new people, networking, and doing things that I probably wouldn't have done or thought about doing. I'm still young in this business.

8. What's the future plan for Branded Baron?

The plan is to get Branded Baron in more stores, but we'll still be selling at certain shows and street fairs.

I went out to a graffiti event in Long Island City, Queens.

There were about 20 graffiti artists who were beautifying the walls with their skills, while people were hanging out on the side walk.

There was a DJ who was playing all the hits, with some b-boys showing off their moves, and some venders selling their shirts.

It was a real artsy vibe.

I'm happy to say I'm safely back in the states, even though it was emotionally difficult to come back.

I was in beautiful Cape Coast, Ghana (Africa) for 2 weeks!

If there's one thing I can recommend for ANYONE and EVERYONE that would be to 1 day in their life to go to Africa or at least to another country. It's an eye opener to see what other people value, to see witness another culture, their living situation, love of the ARTS, as well as, to appreciate what one has as an American.

I lived with a host family with my roommate from California named Ellie, where we both volunteered at a school for 2 weeks. Ellie and I both have a love and passion for the ARTs so we decided to have an after school program for the kids.

In the curriculum, there was little creative time for the kids. So we brought colored pencils for the kids to draw their family and what they want to be when they grow up. The kids were so EXCITED and PROUD of their artwork that they would show each other what they drew, as well as, Ellie and I. They were more excited when they found out that they could take their drawings home to show their parents.

Besides drawing, I wanted the kids to express themselves in an artistic way so I decided to have a talent show. When I mentioned a talent show they weren't too sure what that meant, but when it was explained they were ALL for it! In the beginning they were shy to perforn in front of each other, but after the 1st day their talents were BEAMING, as well as their smiles and the laughter. Even some of the teachers were surprised to see how the kids came out their shells because it's a side they've never seen. Also, some of the teachers performed.

We had some kids who sang, recited a poem, rapped, but it was mostly dancing and drum playing.

This man is known as the

King of Pop

Despite what your personal opinion may be on his up bringing, allegations made towards him, or his personal life. You cannot deny the he was an ENTERTAINER and you cannot deny that you never tried to do the moonwalk.

This man loved and was so passionate about his craft that he ONLY wanted perfection, which is what you call an ARTIST.

He knew how many people were watching him, mimicking his moves, and listening to his music that he decided to educate people about what's going on in the world, yet still entertaining them.

For example,

"We are the World."

With that being said, he cared about others so much that he donated, brought awareness, and sung about issues that some people didn't want to discuss.

Fashion is an area that is always changing day to day and minute to minute,

but what not better way then to get into the minds of the young people who are changing it.

For this is the reason why Wings Of Art interviews "Tomorrow's Talent."

Wings Of Art is honored for Brian, founder of Sublime Dreamer in taking the time out to do this interview.

Check it out....

Brian is a 19 year old student at the University of Delaware majoring in Finance, as well as appreciates anything creative and unique.

1. What's the story behind "Sublime Dreamer"?

I founded Sublime Dreamer in 2008, and the motivation to do so was because of the lack of creativity and uniformity I saw from the current clothing lines at the time. So I decided to come out with my own line that was unique, and actually stood for something. The word Sublime simply means supreme, best or outstanding. And "dreamer" is self explanatory, everyone has dreams they aspire to accomplish and strive for, whether it's in school, sports, work, or whatever. We all want to be the best at whatever our dreams are, as well as working towards it.. hence the phrase "Sublime Dreamer."

2. What makes Sublime Dream different from the other clothing lines?

I think it's the fact that we are a universal brand. Most lines only cater to a specific crowd or their clothing is tailored for a certain audience. However our line, what I have seen is that everyone can relate to it, and wear it. From skateboarders, to sneakerheads, hip-hop lovers, to indie rock fans, etc. Sublime Dreamer isn't boxed into one category and I think that's what really makes us unique.

3. Explain the logo?

When I started the line I had three points I wanted to make sure I covered: simplicity, uniqueness, and rarity. Then, I thought of a panda bear, its simple (only black and white), it's rare, and it's a very unique animal. That's where the bear logo originates from. As for the one eye and the nose pointing to the top right. It represents always looking ahead, moving forward. When most people think of going forward or moving ahead, they usually connect that with going to the right and/or upwards, while going left or downward holds a negative connotation.

4. Do you consider what you do a form of ART?

Yes, I do. I feel any outlet of expression or vision is a form of art. With that being said, different forms of are have served as an inspiration for me, whether it's music, street art and the list goes on.

5. How and when did you begin to involve people to be apart of the Sublime Dreamer movement?

In the beginning of 2009, I brought my idea to my closest friends: Kyle, James, and A.P and they loved it and from there we began. I feel a lot of our success has been due to the fact that we all bring different things to the table, which makes us well-rounded. For example,

Kyle is an excellent marketer and promoter, he can convince you that the shoes you have own are terrible and you should take them off. Then, he'll convince you to buy the same shoes that you just took off, he's that good.

James aka Woody, has a knack for seeing things in ways that without him bringing it to our attention, we would have never thought.

A.P, is a hardworker and reliable, whenever we need something accomplished, he's the guy.

As for as myself, I bring creativity and great understanding of business. We make a great team and I'm blessed to have such a team around me.

6. Has it been an easy journey in making your vision a reality?

Not at all, it's been all about hardwork and obstacles. One example of an obstacle to overcome is balancing school and Sublime Dreamer. We travel a lot such as different fashion shows/events in addition to holding our own events, while being a full-time student. There have been times where we've had a show one night in a different city, where I don't get home till 1 or 2 in the morning, but have a final at 8am. Definitely long days and even longer nights. However, I've been able to stay on top of school and still handle business. You just have to work hard.

7. What advice would you give to all the young and inspiring fashion designers?

Do you, it's as simple as that. I always get asked for advice, tips, etc. from aspiring artistis, but what worked for me won't work for you. You have to do things your own way, that's what makes your line unique. It's a reflection of you, your vision, and dreams.

8. Is their a quote or saying you live by?

We're all about working hard and nonstop so we go by the motto:

"While you sleep, we work...while you work, we work HARDER."

K'naan

I came across a video that captured my interest, as well as the story line behind this artist.

K'naan

K'naan which means "traveler" in the Somali language.

K'naan spent his childhood in Somali, as well as lived there during the Somali Civil War in 1991. He was fortunate to be on the last commercial flight out of Somali during the war. His flight landed him in Harlem, New York with his mother and younger siblings.

Beyond having an influential art appreciation such as his aunt being one of Somalia's most famous singers and his grandfather being a poet he was destined with his craft.

In trying to learn the English language he leaned towards music, primarily Hip-Hop such as Nas. By listening to Nas and Hip-Hop he taught himself how to rap, while expressing his story.

"What we been through was a little harder than life in America's ghetto. Watching people boast about what they were going through was a little boring, a little frustrating. When you don't know there is something worse, more difficult, you tend to focus on your little pains, 'Ah, I have it so bad.' But your shouldn't complain about a headache when someone beside you has a bullet wound."

He's been getting a lot of rave for his "Wavin Flag" song which was so inspirational that it was chosen by Coca-Cola to be the anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

I went out to Club Blvd on Bowery Street

for the Dunkxchange.

DunkXCHANGE is where people can sell their new or old kicks, as well as sell their clothing lines.

This is my 2nd time attending and it's been good thus far.

There's a DJ playing some of that Old Skool Hip-Hop, while people are networking, and shopping for some new kicks and shirts.

Here is the reason why the CEO Gary Hughes created this:

"I actually bought 3 pair of fake Heinekens Dunks from China online that cost me around $1400. I have a wife, kids, and bills to pay. So, when I saved my money for sneakers, I wanted to get the kicks I was paying for. To get duped like that, it crushed me. I could not pay my bills cause some counterfeiters got away with murder. One night, I just had enough. Ironically, it was with a 6-pack of Heinekens. I came up with a concept on paper of a store that had a stage, speakers, a DJ, and a diner in it. After thinking it over, I knew realistically and fiscally, this store was not going to happen. That’s when I came up with the idea for Dunkxchange. The name comes from one of my favorite shoes, the Nike Dunks, and I was inspired by my purchase of fake Heineken Dunks, the name Dunkxchange was created."

It was a calm environment with music in the background with a live drummer and DJ,

who was bringing us back to the tribe with vibrant sounds.

I seen a few people vibing out with their wine, while others viewed Dante's work with side conversations.

I must say Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration is bringing a new aspect to the BedStuy community and what better way than through ART.

When speaking to Dante I new he was not a New Yorker so I asked where he's from and he's from the A-Town (Atlanta). He's been traveling throughout the U.S. in showcasing his work, even though it's a side thing for him.

Dante's work deals with body images which can be seen with his light paint brushes and vibrant colors.

the Mr. Charlton Palmer aka CP the Artist.

CP The Artist is a self taught artist. He has a variety of work that portrays life, love, hope, tragedy, purpose, self-expression, and spirituality.

His work has a little urban, digital, abstract, modern, and classical art. But, with a more speciality in digital painting, graphic art, traditional oil, and acrylic painting.

To sum it up, his work gives the viewer of an old school feel of painting with a modern and digital feel, which is more relatable to todays form of art.

WOA believes and knows you will appreciate his work, as well as, his insight on ART

1. What's ART to you?

Art is the expression of beauty, life, death, and all in between done by the works of the mind.

2. When did you realize or appreciate your craft?

I realized my craft around the first grade. My cousin who was in the second or third grade, showed me a picture he drew. I looked at it and I said, "I can do better than that." From there art was something I did to amuse people. Today, I only appreciate my craft when I'm able to just let myself go. Meaning I just open up to my heart and soul and I create.

3. During your artistic journey, what saying or situation did you come across that you will never forget?

Vincent Van Gogh "I put my heart and soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process." Those words are so true and meaningful.

I like to open my mind and surprise myself. In the movie StepBrothers, Will Ferrell's character says to his brother, "When I sing, it's like I'm hovering over myself, watching myself sing." It's so funny because I am not satisfied until I am able to amaze myself.

4. Have you come across bumps through your artistic journey? If so, what happened? What motivated you through it?

Yes, one of the bumps was finding out who, as an artist, I wanted to be. I struggled over what style I should have, who I'd market myself too, and what type of artist I wanted to be known for. I ended up just being me, undefined and unpredictable in my art. I threw out all the labels and I decided to do whatever art I wanted to do.

5. I had read that you would like to reach out the youth through your craft. Why?

Yes, when I grew up I didn't like to listen to my parents or teachers. I was rebellious. I believe that using my talent and positive examples can help the youth stay or go the right direction. I want the youth to believe in themselves, dream big, fight for their goals, and to care about others. I had visited a Tri-Cities High School in Atlanta. I met with the gifted and talented art students. I lectured them on techniques and my journey. They asked a lot of questions and were so thankful for me to talk to them. It was an amazing experience I will never forget. My hope is that I can be a positive role model in a world that has a few good ones.

6. What INSPIRES your craft?

God. I can't do anything without him. He is my greatest inspiration, because he gave me my talent.

7. Lastly, what would you say to the inspiring artist out there, who are afraid to take that risk?

I say "Walk by faith and not by sight." We all are afraid of the unknown. But if God's given you a gift, He wants you to use it. God obviously has your back. He is forever faithful.

I was told by a friend about an artist named

Alexa Meade.

On Friday, April 2 I went out to 19th street to

Postmasters Gallery to check her out.

Let's just say you have not seen any painting like this before...seriously!

When I saw it online it seems as if I was looking at a live picture or an actual human being in front of me. I couldn't believe this was a painting.

When I went to the gallery to visit Alexa's collection it was jaw dropping to see how detailed she is with her paintings.

To give you alittle background on Alexa, she's 23 years old from D.C. who worked on the Obama Campaign. She graduated with a Bachelors in Political Science from Vassar's College.

Instead of pursuing her Political Science career her artistic hunger took over, which has lead her to her painting journey.

Alexa talks about her painting in stating, she "invented a painting techinque that makes 3 dimensional space look flat, blurring the lines between illusion and reality."

Art Around the World: Slovakian Graffiti

When you see graffiti on the street, do you immediately think of:

A bad neighborhood?

Scribble on the wall?

Vandalism?

I wouldn't be surprised if many people today thought this way. But graffiti is actually a beautiful form of visual art that has often been misunderstood from its beginning. In fact, graffiti is considered one of the four elements of hip hop (along with emceeing, DJing and B-Boying) and has been the visuals for all things hip hop on .... all things! From trains, to walls, to paper, to public property graffiti has made its mark and has spread all over the world.

One country in particular has embraced the old-school form of visual hip hop the most, Slovakia. With spray cans, markers, inks and scratches some beautiful & intricate works of art have been created on both illegal and legal spaces.

Sarah Myanda

Wings Of Art had the pleasure in interviewing the lovely Sarah Myanda, the b-ball poet. Yes guys! She has b-ball and lyrical skills.

Sarah is orignally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but came to NY at the age of 8. She found her love with Spalding, which lead her to earn a basketball scholarship to Stony Brook University. She will be graduating this May in receiving a Bachelors in Journalism in becoming a broadcast sports journalist.

1. How or when did you discover your craft (poetry)?

I've been writing poetry since I could understand the power of words. My mother kind of forced my siblings and I into developing a love for reading and writing, saying that it would help us learn English quicker and do better in the classroom. That led to me writing my own short stories and eventually writing poems. I wrote my first real poem in seventh grade I think. It was about some boy I was crushing on at the time, lol. I'm not really an artist or a poet, I just write.

2. What kind of topics/issues do you talk about in your poems?

I write about things I feel, either directly or indirectly. I've written pieces on love, Africa, abortion, heartache, bliss, trust and a bunch of other things. If an emotion arises when a certain topic is discussed, then it's something to write about. Anything can trigger a poem.

3. How has poetry help you in your life?

It has given me a means of self expression. Where I'm from, it's easy to turn to the natural vices, like sex, drugs and violence. I just pick up a pen and write my heart out. It's therapy.

4. What's a saying, motto, or phrase you live by?

Too many come to mind, but definitely 2 Corinthians 9:6. You get out what you put in. Always. Hard work pays off.

5. If you could predict 5 or 10 years from now. Where do you or would like to see ART- whether it's poetry, painting, dancing, etc?

I want it accessible to anyone that seeks it. It shouldn't be limited to those who can afford it, or have the time and resources to invest in it. Art programs are being cut all across the board. With the economy's current state, the problem is worsening. I just want people who crave art to be able to get it, regardless of their social standing or other factors. I also want it be be as valued as math or science, instead of being classified as an extracurricular activity or a luxury. For kids growing up in this day and age, I definitely think art, in any form, is extremely important. I should be treated as such.

6. What would you say to the shy/quiet boy or girl out there, whose afraid to pursue their DREAMS?
Believe in your vision. Hope trumps fear. Develop a plan and chase your dreams like the alarm clock went off too soon. Seek advice. Be willing to learn and work extremely hard. Don't let your fear keep you from doing something your're passionate about.
7. What does the future hold for Sarah?

ESPN. My ultimate goal is to work for ESPN, either as a producer or a general assignment reporter. It fuses my two loves, journalism and sports. I'll be in grad school in the fall, pursuing a M.A. in Journalism. We'll see where I go from there. As far as poetry goes, I'll keep writing and performing on welcoming stages.

I came across this video and thought it was original, yet creative. For some of us we're caught up in the animation of music videos with a billion people in the video, but don't know who they are, or a bunch of half-naked girls shaking what they mama gave them.

Well, this video is from a group called "OK GO" they were the group who performed on treadmills.

When watching this video I was amazed at how they used our everyday items in their music and video, yet it's still entertaining.

I know I'm late in reporting this, but better late than never, right? Sorry!

Well, Tuesday, February 9, 2010 @ 8:22pm Wings of Art was asked to talk about WOA's mission by the lovely ladies of Pi Delta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

The program was a tribute to one of their founding members Osceola MaCarthy Adams who was very much interested in the ARTs. The ladies of DST wanted to educate their peers about the ARTs in showing the appreaciation, as well as versatility.

I must say the program was well presented because there were various forms of art, such as:

This presenter played his trumpet while using 3 random people from the audience to help him make beautiful music. He had one stomp her feet, another clap, and one make sounds, while he played the trumpet. The purpose was show different sounds can come together to make music.

Next, presenter was Jordan 'JD' Crafton who calls himself a storyteller instead of a filmaker. He talked about how he made his transition from being a composer to a storyteller, as well as being a manager. He told us even though he works 40 or more a week he still makes time for his passion/talent. After his presentation he showed us a trailer of one his films.

WOA approves!

As well as, a saxphone player who told us playing his sax is his LIFE for which he breathes, live, and help pay his bills. WOA this is what you call a DEDICATED artist.

Also, there were 2 young ladies who recited a poem for us.

Sidney Poitier

Sidney Poitier (1927- ) is an actor, film director, diplomat, and author.
Mr. Poitier was breaking into the acting/film industry during a time of segregation and stereotype of African-Americans. During his time African Americans where portrayed as only singing or dancing and he did neither.
He wanted to be known for his acting skills and nothing else, which is when he got his break.

He joined the American Negro Theater, which lead to his leading role on broadway called "Lysistrata."

Mr. Poitier had a leading role on the film "No Way Out"(1950) as a doctor treating a white bigot, which was normally not a role African Americans played at the time. Mr. Poitier stood by his belief in breaking the stereotypes of African Americans on television.

His achievements:

- First black actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor;

- Directed the Richard Pryor-Gene Wilder comedy "Comedy Stir", which was the highest grossing film directed by an African American;

- In 1959 he performed on the broadway play "A Raisin in the Sun", which was the first play by a black playwright to appear on Broadway;

- Directed the first dance battle movie "Fast Forward"(1985);

- In 2001, Poitier received an American Honorary Award for his contribution to American cinema;

- He was a member of the Board of Directors for The Walt Disney Company (1998-2003);

- Currently, he is the ambassador of Bahamas to Japan; and

- In 2009, he received the Medal of Freedom from President Obama.

Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou (1928- ) is a REAL woman of ART. Maya Angelou is a woman who used her talent, passion, and especially her wisdom with others.
Some may know Dr. Angelou as only a poet, but she was also a dancer, singer, writer, civil activist and a woman who was intune with her artistic passion.

Dr. Angelou won a scholarship to attend a High School in San Francisco in studying dance and drama.

She was a dancer for the well-known dance company Alvin Ailey.

She recorded her first album Calypso lady in 1957.

She moved to New York in pursuing her writing passion, which is when she joined the Writers Guild (1950s).

She has mastered French, Italian, Spanish, Arabic and the West African language Fanti.

She had the opportunity to be around activists known as Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

She wrote her first novel "I Know Why the Cage Bird Sings", which was published in 1970.

Her screenplay "Georgia, Georgia" (19) was the first film to ever be filmed by an African American woman, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Award.

She read her poem On the Pulse of Morning at Bill Clinton's inauguration.

She has received numerous such as:

The Langston Hughes Medal;
Grammy for "Best Spoken Word album", On the Pulse of Morning;
Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Association National Award;
Mother Teresa Award; and
Hope for Peace and Justice Voice of Peace award, to name a few

There were so many rooms with a variety of creativity such as:

Jewelry,

Apparel,

Painting,

Photography,

Yawn selling, and a Rock band to entertain.

WOA is all about creativity, the arts, and seeing inspiring talents showcase their work, as well as seeing people giving them the opportunity to do so.

I spoke to the creator of the clothing design called Closet Envi, who told me the owner of the building is giving anyone who wants a room to showcase their work.

An opportunity to have a room for a month!

Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday (1915-1959), is a well known singer and jazz vocalist. Growing up it was difficult for Holiday, but she found her sanction in singing. Holiday would sing at local clubs in New York City, which is when she renamed herself "Billie" after a film star Billie Dove.

At the age of 18, Holiday was discovered by a producer named John Hammond while performing at a Harlem Jazz Club. From that moment on, Holiday's journey began:

- She was one of the first African American females to work with a white orchestra.

- She appeared in a New Orleans film with her idol Louis Armstrong.

- She signed to the record label Columbia in the late 1930s.

- Holiday struggled with narcotics and drugs.

- She performed at a sold out concert at Carnegie Hall in 1948 and 1956. A major accomplishment for a black artist, especially during a time of segregation.

- Performed on CBS's program called The Sound of Jazz.

- Had her first tour in Europe in 1954.

- Some of her well-known songs are "God Bless the Child", "Lady Sings the Blues", & "Strange Fruit", to name a few.

Billie Holiday was a woman who struggled in finding herself in a world that was segregated, even though it was a difficult task she overcame through her passion- Singing. Today, she has left a legacy for all the Black, female singers of today.

This month (February) is known as "Black History Month." Black History Month is a month when people honor and recognize influential African Americans, who overcame the challenges they faced in a society that wanted to keep them unknown. They were judge because of the color of their skin!

These influential African Amercians that we honor today knew in their hearts that their voices needed to be heard, no matter what bumps, beatings, threats, or scare came there way.

They had a DREAM and VISION.

We thank and honor these INSPIRATIONAL, MOTIVATIONAL, & COURAGEOUS African- Americans.

I was fortunate to interview an up and coming fashion designer named Michelle from Jamaica, Queens. Currently, Michelle is a Senior at Philadelphia University, majoring in Fashion Design.

1. How did you know fashion was the way for you?

I became interested in fashion when I was a sophomore in high school. I always loved to draw and experiment with different mediums for creating art. At first, I just loved to shop and dress up on the dress down days my high school held every once a month. During my junior year I took a high school non credit courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology. This was when I first learned how to sew. Sewing at first was a difficult task, but I got used to it and learned that designers have to appreciate the way things are made in order to create them. After learning how to sew and draw, I fell in love with the artistic and creative element fashion has on the way people dress and present themselves. It was then that I wanted to pursue this for a living. In all, I couldn’t picture myself taking up anything else other than fashion design.

2. What inspires your designs?

Music. I can truly admit that I am a music junkie. I love everything from old school hip hop to popular classical pieces. I would often listen to a song, and in my head it would create a mood, a place, a setting, and in fashion, clothes can relate to the way we feel, just like music. Whenever I design anything, I always come up with a concept, which is a visual interpretation of my inspiration. I have many concepts that derived from songs and movies, which are the two things I love most. Every time I draw and sew, I always need music to keep me going.

3. Was it easy for you to take the fashion route, even though some people think the industry is a hit or miss? Who supported you?

No, it was far from easy for me. In getting through the fashion design program at Philadelphia University was a very arduous journey. I have seen many strive and I have seen some fail. Many people have doubted me, and told me negative things about the industry, but through the support of my mother, sister, and truthful friends, I was able to reach where I stand today.

From my perspective, fashion is not always a “hit or miss” industry. There are so many opportunities to becoming successful in the fashion industry. One can design clothes for a big name company or start out with a small local business. I also know many people who have taken up the opportunity to start their own business, and sell their designs online, at a boutique, or make custom garments from their home. The fashion industry also has many fields to choose from, such men’s and women’s wear, children’s wear, lingerie and many other fields. In order for me to find my route in fashion, I had to ask myself “What kind of designer are you?” I later discovered that I have a taste for the contemporary juniors market; delivering something new to urban fashion.

4. What's art to you?

Art is the expression of one’s inner feelings, personality, and the world we live in today. Art is a short word that can be expressed in many different ways, such as poetry, painting, sculpture, music, dance, clothing, and even the way people communicate can be considered a form of art. As a designer, I look at fashion as a form of art people can wear daily. Everything from graphic tees to haute couture gowns is art. If it wasn’t for art, fashion would be very generic and non distinctive. In the world we live in today, we are surrounded by art on a daily basis, everything from company logos to the one dollar bill are artistic expressions.

5. How did you meet Tim Gunn (Project Runway) and did meeting him change your perspective of the fashion industry?

I met him at an event my internship was having in the summer (2009). He gave a speech on how he looked at the fashion industry and how he achieved the position he holds today. Meeting him motivated me to become a better designer, and to never give up on my dream of becoming a designer. He also encouraged me and other aspiring designers to stay true to ourselves and have fun in the industry, and to take risks and know that risk taking is what makes us better designers. He also told me that in order for me to make the best of my internship I have to be like a sponge and absorb everything you learn and what is given to you.

6. Where do you see yourself and your fashion 5 or 10 years from now?

Five to ten years from now, I can picture myself aspiring to own a boutique. Before I pursue this goal, I would want to have some experience on the business side of the fashion industry, since I am more in touch with the design side of it. I always wanted to open a boutique, because, having my own business would be a great way for people to see how I express myself through fashion/clothing as a form of art, and not just as something people wear everyday. I also love to dress people and make people feel great about themselves through the way they dress. I can also picture myself being a stylist, by empowering the self esteem of young men and women through fashion.

7. What would you like to say to the young inspiring fashion designers who are skeptical to enter this industry?

Be confident and self motivated in everything you do. In life, confidence is key, because through confidence, no one can tell you what you can't do. When I wanted to become a fashion designer, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I have come across times when I felt this industry was not for me, but I had a true passion for fashion and through hard work, great work ethic and determination, I learned that I can achieve anything my heart desires. Again, be confident, and ask yourself, “Is this industry for me”? The fashion industry is not for everyone, unfortunately. However, one must be great at taking criticism, develop a tough skin, and know what he/she wants when coming into the field. The industry is intimidating, but it is not impossible.

This lead to the creation of Tomorrow's Talents, which will interview upcoming and inspiring artist on their craft in giving them the moment to bless others with their gift. Also, having you the readers witness the evolution of art through these talents.

Some of you may be wondering why they're called "Tomorrow's."

Art is a craft that gives individuals the opportunity to express themselves which is inspired by anything and everything. One day it can be a homeless person they saw, a bird that flew by them, or the way the sun's reflection beautified a certain object.

In other words, these talents are giving us an insight on tomorrow's art through their form of creativity.

Greetings Artistic Beings,

For many of us on January 18 we either had no work or school and many of us were excited for our 3 day weekend.

The sad thing is many of us spent Monday, Janaury 18 in bed, running a few errands, or catching up on missed T.V. episodes. We forget what January 18 means it's just not any other Monday, but a time when people come together to honor and recognize a remarkable, gifted, non-violent, and believer in change individual by the name of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I spent my MLK day in downtown Brookyln @ the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) where hundreds of people stood in line to remember Dr. King.

The show was opened by the New Life Tabernacle Mass Choir who sang "Lift every voice." Once they blessed us with their voices they took us to church! People were clapping, swaying side to side, stomping their feet, wavying their hands in appreciating why they were there and thankful to see another day.

I must say the speakers who came out to uplift the people in the audience did so and they were the following:

Karen Brooks Hopkins, Pres. of BAM

Governor David Paterson

Charles E. Schumer, U.S. Senator

Christine C. Quinn, City Council Speaker

Anthony Weiner, U.S. Representative

Dr. William Polland, Pres. of Medgar Evers College

But, the man of the day besides Dr. King was the keynote speaker Danny Glover, who was featured in "The Color Purple", "Lethal Weapon", and "Angels in the Outfield" are a few of his work.

Besides being in front of the camara Mr. Glover has been and is currently working in aiding those who need assistance. For example, he serves as a UNICEF Ambassador and is the chairman of TransAfrica.

During Mr. Glover's speech he was enlightening us on Dr. King, how Dr. King's movement impacted him as a child, and what Dr. King would say about what's taking place in Haiti.

When Mr. Glover was talking about Haiti and what they've been through before the earthquake, he became very emotional that he began to choke up during his speech.

The only thing the audience could do was applaude him in encouraging him to continue and that we were all here as ONE! As a Haitian-American I was a bit emotional myself when listening to him, but he did a GREAT job!
Mr. Glover said something that struck me and might struck you, as well. When talking about Dr. King he said "in the ark of his absence what do we understand." In otherwords, Dr. King has left us a legacy and with his legacy what have we grasp from it and for some of us..it's simply another day off.

Greetings Artistic beings,

You've been hearing and watching updates about the earthquake that took place in Haiti.

For those of you who may not know (which should be impossible because it's publicized everywhere) on Tuesday, January 12 around 5pm Haiti was hit with an earthquake at a magnitude of 7.0.

They compare the 7.0 earthquake to a nuclear bomb!

It's horrific to hear and see the images of people crying, scared, and confused in knowing why this situation happened to them, how will they overcome this, or knowing will they ever see their loved ones.

You guys don't know this, but I'm from Haitian descent both my parents were

born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti (the capital).

So this incident is hitting home for me and my family members.

Some of you may not understand the pain because your not from Haiti or don't know someone in Haiti.

But, think about 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina and how that affected you, your loved ones, and your country/state. It's the same feeling in Haiti, but 10x worst because everything has collapsed.

At this point in time, people want to HELP and want to know how they can help.

Wyclef Jean's (he was in the Fugee's) organization named "Yele Haiti" is asking people to text 'Yele' to 501501 to donate $5( you'll be charged $5 on your phone bill), which would go towards assisting those in Haiti.

So TEXT, TEXT,TEXT, TEXT, TEXT, TEXT, and did I say TEXT!!!!

Peace and Greetings,

On Saturday, January 9 @ 3pm I went out to Nuyorican Poet Cafe on E. 3rd street to check out the poetry

audition for the UrbanWord/Knicks Poetry Slam.

It was a FULL house!

The environment was chill, positive, and safe with different age groups and ethinicities.

These talented young poets talked about hatred, love, being physically and emotionally abused, not knowing who their father is, being proud of their Dominican heritage, and how these facebooks and twitters are taking over our the human connection.

It was DOPE stuff!!

People were like laughing, snapping fingers, shaking their heads at the KNOWLEDGE that was being said..these gifted poets were speaking the TRUTH!

Oftentimes, adults underestimate the youth in thinking that don't know what's going on, but in actuality these adults need to LISTEN to the YOUTH.

It was my 1st time at Nuyorican Poet Cafe and I loved the comfort and energy of it.

Congratz to the poets that made it to the next round!!!

Pursue your DREAM and PASSION..don't let anything get in the way of your CRAFT.
